How we gave a family building contractor with half a century of history a website built to earn trust before the first phone call.
A building contractor’s reputation is built one finished job at a time, and it takes decades to earn a name people trust with their home. That reputation doesn’t automatically show up anywhere a prospective client can see it before they’ve picked up the phone, and for a business that has never needed to chase work, that’s rarely felt like a problem until the day it is.
D.V. Read & Son (Surrey) Ltd had exactly that situation. The family run business, led by director Chris Read, has been delivering general building work across Surrey, Sussex, Kent and the wider South East for more than fifty years: new builds, extensions, renovations, kitchens, bathrooms and joinery, the full range a homeowner needs from one trusted contractor rather than a string of subcontractors passed between each other. The work spoke for itself, project after project, largely through word of mouth and repeat clients who came back for a second, and sometimes a third, extension.
What DV Read & Son didn’t have was anywhere for a new enquiry to go and see that history for themselves. Fifty years of finished new builds, extensions and conversions across Surrey, Sussex and Kent existed mostly in photographs on someone’s phone and in the memory of past clients, not in front of the people searching online for a builder they could trust with a six-figure project on their own home. A recommendation from a neighbour only reaches the neighbour’s circle. It doesn’t reach the family two villages over planning a first-floor extension who has never heard the name DV Read & Son.
Chris came to Three Girls Media wanting a website that put that track record on display properly: a real showcase of the finished work, organised the way a homeowner actually thinks about a building project rather than the way the business runs internally, and built to give a new enquiry the same confidence a personal recommendation would.
We started with the structure, because a building contractor’s website has to work the way a homeowner researches a project, not the way the business is organised internally. Rather than one generic services page, we built a dedicated page for each of DV Read & Son’s core services: new build, extensions, renovations, kitchens, bathrooms and joinery, so a
homeowner planning a loft conversion or a first-floor extension lands on a page speaking directly to that job, not a paragraph buried three-quarters of the way down a general description.
The projects section does the real persuading. Rather than describing fifty years of work in the abstract, we built a gallery structured around named, completed jobs: a six-bedroom, seven-bathroom new build in Chichester, a development of three four-bedroom homes in Tadworth, extensions in Nutfield, and a conversion in Handcross. For a business whose entire value proposition is the standard of the finished work, showing the actual jobs, in the actual locations, does more convincing in thirty seconds than a page of description could do in five minutes. Photography carries almost the whole argument on a site like this, so we built the gallery and project pages to let the images do the talking, rather than crowding them with copy nobody came to read. We built the site with web design and SEO foundations laid in together from the start, structured around the service and location terms homeowners across Surrey, Sussex and Kent genuinely search for: new build Tadworth, extension Nutfield, and the dozen variations either side. Getting that structure right from launch, rather than retrofitting keyword targeting onto an existing site later, is the difference between a website that ranks and one that simply exists.
The testimonials carried real weight for a trade business built almost entirely on referral. Clients had already told DV Read & Son, in their own words, about the quality of the finish, how the team managed living in a house mid-build with two young children, how cleanly they coordinated specialist trades like structural steel and bi-fold door suppliers, and how clearly Chris itemised a quote before a spade went into the ground. We gave those genuine reviews a proper home on the site itself, rather than leaving them scattered across third-party platforms where a prospective client might never think to look.
DV Read & Son now has a website that matches fifty years of finished work with a digital presence that actually shows it. A homeowner researching a building contractor for a significant project in Surrey, Sussex or Kent can see named, completed jobs, read genuine client testimonials, and get a clear sense of who they’d be trusting with their home, all before making the first call.
Three Girls Media designed and built the site, and it remains live and in use today. It still carries the Three Girls Media credit in its own footer, years after launch, which is usually the clearest sign of a job that held up rather than one that needed quietly replacing. For a business that grew for half a century on word of mouth alone, that’s the site finally doing the same job a good recommendation always did, just for people who’ve never met Chris yet.
We’ve built websites for building contractors, roofers and tradespeople across Surrey and the South East, laying proper SEO foundations and showcasing real, named projects rather than generic stock photography. Get in touch through threegirlsmedia.co.uk/contact/ to talk about your project.
